The Red Cross Concentration Camp is one of the rare preserved camps in Europe that testifies to the suffering of communists, partisans, Serbian, Roma, and Jewish populations during the German occupation.
The most significant event in the history of this camp is the first successful mass escape organized on February 12, 1942, which also represents the first major escape from a Nazi camp in the occupied Europe. On that day, 105 prisoners managed to escape, while 42 perished during the escape. This event led to mass shootings, resulting in over a thousand and five hundred prisoners being killed at Bubanj on February 16 and 17.
The main camp building has been transformed into a museum complex, and during the tour, you can see the solitary confinement cells, rooms where groups of prisoners stayed, their messages on the walls, as well as their personal belongings.
The Red Cross Concentration Camp has had a significant impact on the history and development of Niš. If you have the opportunity, visit this historically significant place.
