Zemensky monastery

Near the town of Zemen is the Zemen monastery – a wonderful and peaceful place.

The monastery was founded in the 11th century and houses an incredible building – the cross-domed church of St. John the Theologian. It is a monument of Bulgarian culture and architecture because of its unique, masterfully painted murals. Legend says that the sign of the Bulgarian spirit is kept here, as the only symbol that can unite all religions.

The monastery is part of the National History Museum and is worth a visit for its energy and amazing architecture. Today it is a preferred place for wedding ceremonies of many young families.

Very close by, in the village of Peshtera, the Folklore Competition for Wedding Rituals takes place – a unique event that aims to revive traditional wedding customs.

The competition lasts for two days in summer and groups from different parts of Bulgaria participate in it. The initiative aims to maintain the Bulgarian spirit in people’s lives. Everyone can visit it and immerse themselves in our wonderful past.
