Pchelina Dam and the chapel “St. Ioan Letney”

Pchelina Dam is a very peaceful and suitable place for a short “escape” from the city. One of the largest dams in Southwestern Bulgaria, it is located about 60 km from Sofia. Near the dam wall you can see the rock formation Vuchanski kamak, and above it there is an elevation with a unique view. The place is extremely picturesque and offers rich material for beautiful professional and amateur photographers.

Besides the beautiful panorama and the feeling of timelessness that the dam brings, the chapel “St. Ioan Letni” is also a good reason to visit it. The village of Pchelintsi was located once on the site of the dam, hence its name. People were displaced, and the village was submerged.

Today, the chapel is the only evidence of the existence of the village. It was built in 1350, as evidenced by a flagstone placed on its doorstep. Some of the chapel’s frescoes have been preserved to this day and are definitely worth seeing.
