The Rila Monastery

In the wilds of Rila Mountain hides a stunning place – the Rila Monastery. It is the largest spiritual center in Bulgaria.

Established by Saint Ivan of Rila in the 10th century, the monastery has been an important part of the life of Bulgarians throughout the centuries. It was the spiritual, cultural and enlightened center of Bulgaria. It houses the Nativity Church and the Transfiguration Chapel. Over the centuries, the Rila Monastery has preserved a large volume of scientific works and was part of the spiritual awakening of the Bulgarians during the Renaissance.

The Rila Monastery is a national museum, a national historical reserve and part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is located between the rivers Rilska and Drushliavitsa, at 1100 meters above sea level. It is located about 40 km from Blagoevgrad.
